Was a great read, some of my family the Daniels lived in that area and at the bottom of cheetham hill at the back of St. Chad's Church. I never knew them.

This story reminds me of my dad. In the early 50’s my mam and dad opened a grocers shop in Siam st. Bradford Manchester. For New Year’s Day he would buy a large box of oranges to give away to local children, they must have come from miles around as I did not recognise many of them.

Who would have thought over a hundred years later we still have families living in poverty relying on charity to feed and clothe themselves. I was in town last week (not Manchester) and while walking past the many homeless and destitute living in the shop doorways and tents in the park, my thoughts kept going back to the scenes you describe in your book. It was sinful then that people had to live like that and it's history repeating itself again in towns all over the UK. What a hero that man was running the mission. The only difference today is they're called food banks not missions.

What an amazing story; thanks Dean. My great-great-grandfather - Henry Brotherton - lived at 141 Charter Street in 1891, running a pub. My great-grandfather went to the Charter Street School across the road from their house, and we still have a book he was gifted by the school as a child. I've only recently signed up to your blog and emails while delving into my family history. And I think we may have been journalists at MEN and the Observer weeklies around the same time. Will keep an eye out if you do any tours in 2024; would love to learn more about Angel Meadow.

Thanks for this story Dean. I would like to think my grandma's family was one of those recipients, as she was born in 1891 in Ashley Lane. Her father had a wife and children elsewhere and would have spent Christmas 1890 in prison, having beaten up my great grandma for the second time. I hope Christmas 1891 for grandma and her mother was a peaceful one, with food in their bellies.
