Welcome to the Meander — my new series exclusively for paid subscribers that explores offbeat paths in Manchester and Salford…

If one street could symbolise the different faces of Manchester and Salford, it would have to be Chapel Street on the right bank of the Irwell.

Standing just a stone’s throw from Manchester’s most fashionable shops, much of Salford’s ā€œold chapā€ awaits the march of the developers.

With a number of abandoned shops and empty pubs, a walk down here feels like wandering into a different era.
