I don't understand why books are condemned. They are an important part of understanding history. Take Uncle Tom's Cabin. There are those who want the book banned because it contains negative stereotypes of African Americans. But put it in its historical context. The outrage engendered by Uncle Tom's fictional life helped inspire men from the North to volunteer to serve in the American Civil War. The book helped change the country, and legalized-slavery was finally ended.

I've not read the complete book by Engels only certain extracts. They were jaw dropping indeed. I'm also fascinated by his domestic life in Manchester and have read a bit about that.

There was quite the German community in Manchester at the time due to trade and I find it all very interesting. Looking forward to my tour in July Dean .

Thanks Anne. I’ve really only read the Manchester bits in detail too. You’re right there was a big German community in Manchester and in Angel Meadow too. It will be great to catch up finally on the tour next month.
